Farsickness, It’s A Thing

Fernweh is a German word for farsickness or longing for unseen places. It comes from fern, meaning “far” and weh defined as “pain, misery, or woe.” It is a longing for far-off places, especially those you have never visited.

Long before our current zeitgeist, I was afflicted by a severe case of fernweh. The inability for me to move about the world, it is now considered chronic. I’ve always understood travel, especially global travel, is a luxury not afforded by all, and I’ve never taken for granted my ability to do so as freely as I did.

As a frequent and passionate domestic and international traveler, coming to terms with COVID19 travel restrictions has been incredibly difficult. I have been forced to cancel multiple trips, and all future travel plans (including just dreaming) are put on hold indefinitely.

I’ve recently reflected on trips from the past, looking at photos and savoring all the unexpected moments and experiences.

One year ago today, I walked for miles and miles on the streets of New Orleans with little to no cares in the world except for where my next dining and cocktail adventure would be.

Sniffles.

I’m so profoundly farsick and homesick. Despite the currently blah blah blah, I have to believe (it’s the only thing keeping me sane) we’ll sort it out soon in a way that makes sense.

Fellow wanderlusters, I’d love to hear how you’re making out and what you recommend to ease the pain for a chronic case of farsickness. Drop in the conversation over on Insta.
